We’ve noticed a significant increase in the demand for vegan protein bars over the last three years. Vegan bars contain no ingredients derived from animals- the right choice if you have decided to eliminate animal products from your diet for health, ethical, or environmental reasons.

Since 95% of the ingredients we offer are vegan-friendly, in this post we will outline the ingredients that you will want to avoid when making a vegan/dairy-free bar. Additionally, we will answer a list of questions about vegan bars that we have received from our customers over the years.

WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A VEGAN?

Vegan foods contain no ingredients derived from animals.

IS A VEGAN BAR RIGHT FOR ME?

It’s your choice based on personal preference and dietary restrictions. We can tell you that it is possible to make a vegan bar that tastes just as good as a bar with whey protein.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN BARS?

A vegetarian protein bar can contain ingredients that are derived from animals such as egg white protein, whey protein, and honey. Vegan bars cannot contain any of these ingredients. Any bar you make at The Bar Shack would be considered Vegetarian-friendly.

WHICH INGREDIENTS CONTAIN DAIRY?

The only ingredients that currently contain dairy are whey isolate, raw grass-fed whey, egg white powder, and white chocolate.

WHAT ARE THE VEGAN PROTEIN & FLOUR OPTIONS?

All of the protein powder & flour options are vegan-friendly, except for whey and egg white powder.

This depends on a number of factors. Generally, we recommend a blend of pea and brown rice protein because this makes a ‘complete’ protein. Complete proteins contain all essential amino acids.

HOW DO I MAKE A VEGAN BAR WITH THE HIGHEST PROTEIN CONTENT?

To make a high protein vegan bar, choose pea or brown rice protein (or a combination of both). Also, choose ‘Soft & Chewy’ or ‘Soft & Nutty/Seedy’ base. If you select buckwheat or coconut flour the protein content of your bar will be lower.

DO VEGAN BARS HAVE AN EARTHY FLAVOR?

Vegan proteins (pea and brown rice) have a noticeable ‘earthy’ flavor. If this is an issue, consider combining them with coconut or buckwheat flour, or masking their flavor with a strong extract like lemon or lime.

WHAT IS THE TEXTURE OF A VEGAN BAR LIKE?

Vegan bars tend to be a bit ‘grittier’ and not as smooth as bars that contain whey or egg white protein. If the texture is an issue and can’t use whey or egg white protein, we suggest selecting ‘Soft & Chewy’ as the base of your bar.

HOW MANY GRAMS OF PROTEIN IS IN A VEGAN BAR?

The protein content ranges from as low as 4 to as high as 15g per 55 gram bar.
