How to Make Date Based Protein Bars

Dates are one of the key ingredients in two of the three protein bar base options we offer. They taste great, make an excellent texture, and do a terrific job of binding the ingredients together.

Date based protein bars have a soft, slightly chewy texture with medium to high sweetness levels depending on the other ingredients you choose.

In this post, we will explain more about how you can make your own date based protein bar, and also answer common questions our customers have asked regarding date based bars.

 

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS?

Both the ‘Soft & Datey’ and ‘Soft & Chewy’ options contain dates but in different percentages of total ingredients. We do not currently offer an option that is 100% dates, only a combination of dates and the nut/seed butter of your choice.

‘Soft & Datey’ allows you to choose the percentage of dates in a bar (low, medium, high). Regardless of the percentage of dates you choose here, this base has the highest percentage of dates.

‘Soft & Chewy’ has a preset percentage of dates, with an additional binding ingredient that you can select (coconut nectar, fiber syrup, or honey). This option allows a little more control over sugar levels in your bars than the ‘Soft and Datey’ option.

Now that we’ve outlined how you can make your own date bars, we will answer a list of the most common questions we have about date bars from our own customers.

WHO SHOULD CHOOSE DATES IN THEIR BARS?

Date based bars are a great choice for anyone looking for a ‘well rounded’ snack to eat at any time throughout the day. They do contain more carbohydrates than some of the other options we offer though, so if you are looking for bars that are low in sugar you may not want to go this route. Also, if you like a chewier consistency you may want to forego this option and choose ‘Soft & Chewy’ instead.

WHAT MAKES THE PERFECT DATEY TEXTURE?

The key to consistency when it comes to dates is using a date paste that is tested for moisture levels. When we first started The Bar Shack we used whole Medjool dates in the bars we made, but this made it nearly impossible to get a consistent texture in each batch since some dates were much drier than others.

DO DATES CONTAIN A LOT OF SUGAR?

Dates are quite sweet and contain natural sugars. If you like sweeter bars, add more dates. If you are not a fan of sweetness, decrease the amount of date paste in your bar.

ARE THEIR BENEFITS OF WHOLE DATES VS. DATE PASTE?

Although diced whole dates will work for small batches, we have found that the only way to get a consistent texture is to use a quality date paste.

DO DATES CONTAIN GLUTEN?

Dates are not processed in the same facilities as wheat, and therefore do not contain gluten.

HOW MANY CALORIES ARE IN DATE BASED BARS?

Our bars contain a combination of dates and nut butter and range from 220-260 calories per 55g bar. Of course, bars that only contain dates and no nut or seed butters would be lower in calories, but we no longer offer those as an option.

WHAT ARE THE NUTRITION BENEFITS OF DATES?

Dates are a source of fiber, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals including calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and zinc.
