If you’re based in the United States and looking for a new business opportunity in the health/fitness/nutrition industry, we’re offering something that’s kind of unique…
A few years ago we developed (from scratch) an eCommerce protein bar service that enables people to easily build their own personalized boxes of protein bars through an online platform we created.
It’s sort of a hybrid business model where advanced technological capabilities intersect with low-tech manufacturing to offer customers a highly personalized version of a popular health food product.
Here’s how it works:
Customers arrive on our website and choose all of their own protein bar ingredients. We use those ingredients to make their custom protein bars from scratch (no cooking or baking) in our commercial kitchen. Then we ship their orders directly to them.
Watch the video below to see how the process works from start to finish…
Why We’re Selling
This business has been a “child” of ours for quite some time. And while it hasn’t been impacted by the pandemic, the pandemic has motivated us to push it out the door so we can use our time to focus on other unrelated projects.
All the components for the business have been created, along with a small user base of loyal, revenue generating customers. The only thing that’s missing is a motivated team who wants to push the business to the next level.

Starting with pencil and paper, our “build-a-bar” tool and functionality was developed from scratch with the intention of creating a simple, user-friendly experience that enables customers to build great tasting, high-quality protein bars with just a few clicks.
Its main components include:
- Recipe logic / algorithm (framework responsible for creating customer’s recipes)
- Nutrition data (realtime nutrition chart functionality + custom labels)
- Front / backend user interface (developed on OpenCart platform)
Frontend – How The Process Works
Customer arrives on the website > selects their ingredients from the menu options > assigns a personalized name to their protein bars > submits their order.
Backend – How The Process Works
Customer’s ingredient selections are automatically converted into a unique protein bar recipe, which displays the specific number of grams (g) required for each of their selected ingredients > recipe is printed and taken into the kitchen where it’s used to make the customer’s order.
The custom nutrition label (1″ x 3.5″) is also generated, which gets printed onto stickers (shown in the picture below) then adhered to the backs of the individual protein bar packages.
Marketing / Sales
We haven’t done any marketing for the business. All revenue has been generated through word-of-mouth, occasional blog post reviews, and organic search engine traffic through Google.
There’s lots of ways to leverage the unique “Build-a-Bar” model to market the business:
- Social media (giveaways, ads)
- PPC campaigns
- SEO / blog (health / fitness / nutrition / lifestyle / etc.)
- Content (guides, DIY, educational, etc.)
- Video / YouTube
- Influencer collaborations
- Affiliates / referrals
- Events / gifts
In addition to direct sales made through the website, we also have a number of wholesale accounts with local, and some out of state businesses. But again, these are only word-of-mouth accounts and could be expanded very quickly to generate additional revenue and marketing: gyms, cafes, juice bars, natural food stores, etc.
This helps reach a customer base that would otherwise not find the business through online channels.
Co-packing Services & Opportunities
Although we receive many requests of this nature, we rarely accept orders of this kind due to time constraints and limited manufacturing capacity. The new owner may want to pursue this avenue for an additional stream of revenue.
Protein Bar Recipes
We have developed multiple recipes integrated into the ‘Build-a-Bar’ page that will become the property of the new owner.
Biggest Weakness – Scaling
Scaling is obviously the biggest weakness for the current model. But there’s plenty of ways to get creative…
Over the last two years, The Bar Shack has generated an average of $5000/mo. in gross sales. More detailed financial data will be provided to serious buyers only.
The website receives an average of 800 unique visits per month from direct, organic, and referral traffic source.
Access to the Google Analytics data will be provided to serious buyers, upon request.
- Rent–varies by location and square footage (800+ square foot facility required)
- Insurance (currently under $700/yr)
- Payroll if not owner-operated (currently 20hrs/week for production)
- Inventory ($2,500-$4,000 approx. at any given time)
- Marketing (variable cost)–we’re not currently marketing the business
You will need to contact your local county/state health department to obtain detailed information since the requirements for a commercial kitchen depend on your location.
As the business currently stands, it can be operated in a unit as little as 800 square feet with the appropriate layout.
We’ve developed a longterm, reliable relationship with an overseas manufacturer who prints the polypropylene protein bar pouches. The cost is .07¢ per pouch @ 10,000. The printing is done on a conventional printing press. Digital options are available in the US but the cost has increased over the past couple of years. Turn around time is typically 2-3 weeks.
The boxes are printed by a company in the US. They cost .65¢ per box @ 2,000. They’re printed digitally. Turnaround time is typically 10 days.
With the exception of some local wholesale accounts that we currently deliver to, the majority of orders that come through our website are shipped via UPS or USPS.
We use XPS shipper which offers competitive rates and easy integration with our website making the label printing process fast and efficient.
Non-Disclosure Agreement/Non-Compete Agreement
Potential buyers will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement prior to the release of any sensitive business information such as web traffic, financials etc.
Upon the sale of the business the seller is willing to sign a non-compete agreement with terms that satisfy the buyer.
